Compression is one of those magical effects that can change your guitar tone from good to great. The TC Electronic HyperGravity is one of the most advanced compressors ever put in a guitar pedal format with more than enough features to get the sound you want.

What Does A Compressor Do

A compressor works by increasing the volume of quieter sections and lowering the volume of louder parts. This ends up doing one three things.

  • Gives your a guitar a faster attack, perfect for funk and soul styles
  • Flattens out the peaks giving your a guitar a more consistent output level.
  • Increases your guitars sustain by increasing the output level as a note starts to die out.

Multiband Operation

One of the main things that really separates a standard compressor and this pedal is that the HyperGravity is a multiband compressor. As a compressors job is to make loud things quieter and quieter things louder give you a more even sound one blanket frequency is hard to get right.

For example if you set up the compressor based on you playing on the low E string when you get to the higher strings your tone will sound squashed with very little dynamics. If you do it the other way you will hear next to no effect on the lower E string.

By using a multiband design the pedal is automatically set up to spread the compression evenly across all strings for the perfect amount of the effect.

Three Modes

Thanks to a mini toggle switch you can go between a couple of different modes. Spectra is an ultra transparent compressor that is perfect for your more modern styles where you don’t want to colour the sound. Vintage as the name suggests is a re-imagining of a vintage guitar compressor that adds some warmth to your tone just like you would have had using this classic effect.

Finally the last mode is the Toneprint option. Using toneprint you can create your own custom compressor settings using the tone print editor on iPad, PC or Mac letting you dive in deep to the hidden settings underneath. You can also beam some of your favourite artists presets down your pickup straight in to the HyperGravity.

Here’s what TC Electronic say about the Hyper Gravity

HyperGravity Compressor is the missing link that will take your tone from good to great. Featuring no less than three amazing compression modes; including a state-of-the-art multiband compressor, a cool vintage compressor, plus endless compression combinations through TonePrint. HyperGravity Compressor is the key to getting that much desired pro tone with even dynamics. Kick it in and be prepared to shine!

Compress Without Compromise
HyperGravity Compressor’s highly advanced multiband dynamics algorithm is the same MD3 compression algorithm that can be found in our studio production masterpiece, System 6000 w. Please read more for images, details and to place an order.

Compressor

A compressor is a type of guitar effect that reduces the dynamic range of the guitar signal by attenuating the louder parts while boosting the quieter ones. This results in a more consistent and even sound, with a smoother overall volume level. Compressors are used to even out the differences in volume between different notes or chords, making them sound more uniform and polished.

Compressor pedals typically offer controls for adjusting parameters such as threshold (the level at which compression starts), ratio (the amount of compression applied), attack (how quickly compression is applied), and release (how quickly compression is released). By adjusting these controls, guitarists can tailor the compression effect to suit their playing style and musical preferences.

Compressors are commonly used in a wide range of musical genres, including rock, blues, country, and funk, to enhance sustain, control dynamics, and add punch to guitar tones. They are particularly useful for achieving a consistent and professional sound in both live performances and studio recordings. Popular compressor pedal models include the MXR Dyna Comp, Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer, and Keeley Compressor Plus.
