Marshall JCM800 2203 100w Valve Head

A legend in the world of amps, the JCM2203 is the 100W head that kicked off the Marshall JCM revolution and changed the face of modern amplifiers forever. Simple yet effective, thousands of records feature this sound – that high driven yet tight and controlled distortion that transparently brings out the creaminess of a single cutaway or the character of a Strat.

The modern 2203 doesn't seek to expand on the original design, featuring simply EQ and preamp gain as well as a master volume and high and low sensitivity inputs to help control your overall gain and level. Just plug into a Marshall 4×12 and you're away – instant, classic and 100% authentic rock guitar sound!

Here's what Marshall say about the JCM800 2203

The all-valve JCM800 2203 is one of the most highly respected 100 Watt Marshall heads in the company's long history. Evolving from the legendary 100 Watt 'Plexi' head, it was one of our first amplifiers to feature a Master Volume (MV) control.

The very essence of simplicity, the JCM800 2203 is a one channel all-valve amp with no reverb or built-in effects. Its foolproof interface, distinctive roar and larger-than-life 'edge' immediately set the standard by which all other rock amps were judged and it remained the 'industry benchmark' throughout the entire 16 years of its production life.

Now it's back by popular demand and as with the 1959SLP and 1987X we've added a Series Effects Loop featuring a true bypass switch that takes the loop completely out of the circuit, thus ensuring the original tone isn't compromised in any shape or form.

100w

100w (100 watts) typically refers to the power output of an amplifier. In guitar gear, a 100-watt valve amp is known for its headroom, volume, and punch, often used in larger venues or for heavy rock and metal tones. It delivers more clean volume before distortion compared to lower wattage amps, which means it stays clearer at higher volumes. However, it can be overkill for small rooms or home use unless it’s paired with an attenuator or run through a reactive load and cab sim. High wattage doesn’t always mean better tone—it just offers a different kind of dynamic range and stage presence.

Guitar Amps

Guitar amps are essential for shaping and amplifying your sound, whether you’re playing electric, acoustic, or bass guitar. They come in various types—valve (tube), solid-state, and digital modelling—each offering different tonal characteristics and features. From compact practice amps to powerful stage-ready combos and heads with matching cabs, this category covers all your amplification needs. We stock a wide range from trusted brands, offering everything from clean tones to all-out distortion, perfect for home practice, recording, or live performance.

Head Amplifier

A head is the amplifier unit of a guitar rig that contains the electronics responsible for shaping and boosting your guitar’s signal. Unlike combo amps, a head does not include built-in speakers and needs to be connected to a separate speaker cabinet. This setup offers greater flexibility, allowing players to mix and match different heads and cabinets to tailor their tone and volume. Heads come in various types, including valve (tube), solid-state, and modelling, catering to a wide range of sounds and playing styles.

valve

Valve, also known as tube, refers to a type of amplifier technology that uses vacuum tubes to amplify the guitar signal. Valve amps are renowned for their warm, rich tone, natural compression, and smooth distortion when driven hard. Many players prefer valve amps because of their dynamic response and organic sound character. Although they require more maintenance and can be heavier than solid-state amps, valve amplifiers remain a favourite choice for professional musicians seeking classic tones and expressive performance.

Vintage

A vintage guitar is a guitar that is considered to be of significant age, typically over 30 years old, and often possesses historical, cultural, or collector’s value. Vintage guitars are highly sought after by collectors, musicians, and enthusiasts for their craftsmanship, tone, playability, and historical significance.

Vintage guitars can come from various eras, each with its own unique characteristics and desirability.

Vintage guitars often exhibit signs of wear and aging, which can add to their character and authenticity. However, originality, condition, and provenance are crucial factors that determine the value of a vintage guitar. Well-maintained and all-original vintage guitars with documented history and provenance tend to command higher prices on the collector’s market.

While vintage guitars can be valuable investments, they are also cherished for their playability and the unique sonic characteristics they offer. Many musicians prefer vintage instruments for their mojo, vibe, and connection to music history.
