We have all heard the original Echorec synonymous with guitarists like Syd Barrett and David Gilmour this effect has appeared on countless albums across every style. Catalinbread realized that this effect needed to come back but in a form that everyday guitarists are able to afford. That is where the Catalinbread Echohead comes in handy.

4 Heads, 12 Modes

With all of the features of the the original echo rec through with some really cool added touches the Echorec will be hard to tell from the original. 4 different ‘playback heads’ are accessible via the 12 mode selector dial that gives you pretty much any combination of heads you would want. From bright and clean delay tones with galloping rhythms to smoother warmer sounds that really fill out the mix everything is possible with the echorec.

Internal Modulation

It is not all about the timing though as the Echo Rec was originally an analogue echo that wore over time there is modulation to be considered. So catalinbread have added in an internal modulation control that will take you from clean as a whistle to rather wobbly this way you can set exactly how old of a drum you want.

Modern Control

While the original Bison Echorec was amazing it doesn’t have the same levels of control as this catalinbread remake. The Swell control sets just how many repeats you want after you have stopped playing and the Mix controls how loud the effect is…pretty standard for a modern delay right? The two controls that bring the echorec forward are the Tone and Program Select knobs. The tone control is a high quality circuit that changes the entire feel of the delay, low down you get a really warm almost reverb like response while in the higher ranges you are hitting tape echo tonality. The program select is a 12 notched knob that at each point engages different ‘heads’ this means it is very easy to get the exact gallop and spacing you want.

Here’s what Catalinbread say about the Echorec Delay

The Swell knob controls the number of repeats regenerated – from a single repeat of each playback head to infinite repeats.

The Tone control tilts the EQ of the repeats from dark and fat to bright and thin. Dark settings makes the repeats sit in the background. Bright settings emphasizes the attack, great for playing off the syncopated rhythms of the multi-head arrangement.

The original Echorec had a maximum delay time of 300ms. The delay time on the Catalinbread Echorec goes from about 40ms -1000ms. And the cool thing is you can twist the Delay Time knob in real-time to get speeding-up / slowing-down, spaceship warp landing sounds!

Mix knob goes from full dry to full wet giving a lot of flexibility to use the Echorec in a variety of situations, even wet/dry rigs by setting the Mix full wet.

The original Echorec had a 12 position switch which controlled the vario. Please read more for images, details and to place an order.

Echo

Echo, also known as delay, is a guitar effect that produces discrete repetitions of the original signal after a certain period of time. These repetitions are called echoes and are heard as distinct, spaced-out repetitions of the original sound. Echo pedals typically offer controls for adjusting parameters such as delay time (the length of time between the original sound and each echo), feedback (the number of repetitions), and level (the volume of the echoes relative to the original signal).

Echo effects can range from subtle repeats that add depth and dimension to a guitar tone to more pronounced echoes that create rhythmic patterns and textures. They are commonly used in various musical genres, including rock, blues, ambient, and electronic music, to add atmosphere, depth, and complexity to guitar solos, riffs, and rhythm parts.

Echo pedals are versatile tools that allow guitarists to create a wide range of echo effects, from classic tape echo simulations to modern digital delays with advanced features like tap tempo and stereo output. Popular echo pedal models include the TC Electronic Flashback Delay, Boss DD-7 Digital Delay, and Strymon El Capistan.

Guitar FX

Guitar FX (effects) refer to the wide range of pedals and processors that shape and manipulate a guitar’s signal to create different sounds. From classic distortion and overdrive to reverb, delay, modulation, and pitch-shifting, effects are at the heart of a guitarist’s creative toolkit. Whether analogue or digital, stompbox or multi-effects unit, Guitar FX allow players to express mood, texture, and dynamics in unique ways. Used thoughtfully, they can transform a simple riff into something atmospheric, aggressive, or entirely otherworldly.

pedal

A pedal is a compact device that guitarists use to alter their instrument’s sound by shaping effects such as distortion, delay, reverb, and modulation. Typically housed in a rugged enclosure and controlled by footswitches, pedals are designed to be placed on the floor for hands-free operation during playing. They can be analogue or digital, true bypass or buffered, and come in countless varieties to suit different styles and preferences. Pedals are essential tools for creating signature tones and adding colour and texture to a guitarist’s sound.
