EarthQuaker devices are back with another interstellar creation that'll propel you into the next plain of existence!

The latest version of the Grand Orbiter Phaser offers stunning sounds that tread the line between phaser and vibrato. Whether you're looking for a slow-swirling night sky atmosphere, a full-blown communications from outer space, the Grand Orbiter's simple controls have everything you need!

EarthQuaker have updated the V3 with silent soft-touch switching, ensuring that when you stomp, you won't get any unattractive clicks. They've also added the neat flexi-switch feature, allowing momentary application of the effect. So if, mid-riff, you decice you want to set your tone to stun, simply stomp and hold until you've phased to your heart's content!

Here's what EarthQuaker have to say about the Grand Orbiter V3:

The Grand Orbiter V3 is a 4 stage OTA-based phaser with a diverse feature set that can go from stationary and resonant to slow and mellow and on through fast and swirly. It has a three-way toggle switch to select between the ranges of modulation: Rate 1 is slow sweep mode, Rate 2 kills the LFO and allows you to use the Grand Orbiter as a fixed resonant filter and Rate 3 is fast sweep mode. So no matter what starlit galaxies you wanna go to, Grand Orbiter is definitely the right vessel for your intergalactic travels!

Features:

• Four-stage OTA-based Phaser and Vibrato – Switchable via phase/vibrato mini-toggle
• Rate toggle selects between three LFO speeds – Slow, Fixed and Fast
• New Flexi-switch – allows for traditional latching or momentary operation
• True bypass – Silent soft-touch switching
• All-analog signal path
• Top-mounted jacks – for effortless pedalboard implementation

The master Rate control fine tunes the speed of the LFO in each of these modes and the flashing red LED acts as a visual indicator, even when the effect is in bypass mode. The Depth control blends the shifted signal in with the dry signal and controls the intensity of the effect. The Sweep control governs the peak frequency of the phased signal’s tone, turned full clockwise the sweep is lively and intense, whereas turning counter clockwise yields a darker, more laid back peak. The Resonance provides a wide range of control over regeneration and at higher settings adds a more pronounced and resonant tone. You can also use the Grand Orbiter as a true pitch vibrato with the “Phase/Vibrato” switch. When in “Vibrato” mode, the dry signal is removed and the Depth control acts as a volume control.

This pedal is 100% analog, true bypass and built by entirely by hand in beachy Akron, Ohio.

Guitar FX

Guitar FX (effects) refer to the wide range of pedals and processors that shape and manipulate a guitar’s signal to create different sounds. From classic distortion and overdrive to reverb, delay, modulation, and pitch-shifting, effects are at the heart of a guitarist’s creative toolkit. Whether analogue or digital, stompbox or multi-effects unit, Guitar FX allow players to express mood, texture, and dynamics in unique ways. Used thoughtfully, they can transform a simple riff into something atmospheric, aggressive, or entirely otherworldly.

Phaser

A guitar phaser is an electronic effect used to alter the sound of a guitar by creating a series of peaks and troughs in the frequency spectrum of the audio signal. This effect is achieved through a process called phase shifting, where the audio signal is split into two paths. One path remains unchanged, while the other is subjected to an all-pass filter that shifts its phase. When these two signals are recombined, they interfere with each other, creating the characteristic swooshing or swirling sound associated with phasers. This effect can add a sense of movement and depth to the guitar’s tone, making it a popular choice for both rhythm and lead playing.

Phasers often come with controls that allow the guitarist to manipulate various parameters of the effect. Common controls include the rate or speed of the phase shifting, which determines how quickly the peaks and troughs move through the frequency spectrum. Another typical control is the depth, which adjusts the intensity of the effect by varying the extent of the phase shift. Some phasers also offer resonance or feedback controls, which emphasize certain frequencies and can create more pronounced, dramatic effects. These adjustable parameters make the phaser a versatile tool, capable of producing subtle modulation to extreme, spacey sounds.

The phaser effect has a rich history in music, with notable usage across different genres. In the 1970s, phasers became particularly popular in rock and funk music, with bands like Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones using them to create psychedelic and immersive soundscapes. Songs like “Breathe” by Pink Floyd and “Shattered” by The Rolling Stones showcase the distinct, swirling sound of the phaser. Over the years, phasers have continued to evolve, with modern digital models offering more precise control and additional features. Despite technological advancements, the core appeal of the phaser remains its ability to transform a guitar’s tone, adding a dynamic, textured quality that can enhance any musical piece.
