You can’t beat a classic, and if you can’t beat them, join them! This Marshall 1974X gives you all of the authentic, vintage, overdrive-soaked tone that we have come to love and expect from the classic amps of the 1970s. This fiery 18 watt, 1×12″ combo amp is an enticing hand-wired reissue of the model 1974, a combo that was originally produced from way back between 1965 to 1968. Initially developed in 1965 to be used as a more personal practice amp, it lacked volume and power that other Marshall Amp Heads could offer. Ideal for much smaller environments, it held held its bottom end growl and bite at lower volumes, making this amp ideal for bedroom guitar heroes!

Loaded with two EL84 tubes in the power amp, three ECC83s in the preamp, an EZ81 rectifier tube, all complimented with a tasty valve-driven tremolo as a cherry on the top, this is one combo amp that is not to be underestimated! Extreme tonal authenticity is offered here, perfectly matching the original 20W, ceramic magnet Celestion T1221 speaker. Throw in a footswitch and you’re ready to rock, just don’t wake the neighbours!

Key Features:

  • Handwired reissue of the model 1974
  • 18Watts
  • 2x EL84 power tubes
  • 3x ECC83 preamp tubes
  • EZ81 rectifier tube
  • Tube-driven tremolo

What Marshall say about the 1974X 18 watt Combo Amp:

The 18 Watt 1974X is a reissue of the fabled 1974 dual channel, all-valve combo, produced between 1966 and 1968. Just like the original, the 1974X is hand soldered, with an aluminum chassis, and has a valve-driven tremolo circuit. Its two-channel design is straightforward and effective – just volume and tone controls on channel one and volume, tone, speed and sensitivity on the tremolo channel.
Because of its lower Wattage, the 1974X power valves will overdrive sooner than an amp of higher power. This means that the 1974X produces harmonically rich and sensitive, vintage Marshall tones at volumes that won’t shift your hearing; this is great for the studio and gives you greater control of live sound. That said, flat out it still packs quite a punch.
The T1221/67 Greenback speaker used in the original 1974 combo would mature over time, with its sound softening with age. The special 12” Celestion G12M-20 Greenback in the 1974X has been ‘aged’ to get as close as possible to that vintage, worn in, ’60s vibe.

18W

1×12

A 1×12 (pronounced “one by twelve”) refers to a guitar or bass amplifier cabinet that contains one 12-inch speaker. It’s a common size for both combo amps and speaker cabinets, offering a balance between portability and full-bodied sound. A 1×12 setup is often favoured for its warm tone, focused projection, and manageable size—ideal for small gigs, studio sessions, or home use.

Amp

An amp, short for amplifier, is a crucial piece of equipment that boosts the signal from your guitar or other instruments, allowing you to control volume and shape your tone. Guitar amps come in various styles, including valve (tube), solid-state, and digital modelling, each offering unique sound characteristics. Whether you’re practicing at home, recording in the studio, or playing live, the right amp can make all the difference in achieving your desired sound—from clean and crisp to rich overdrive and distortion.

Combo

A combo amp is a guitar amplifier that combines both the amplifier head and speaker(s) into a single, portable unit. This all-in-one design makes combo amps convenient for practice, recording, and gigging without needing separate components. They come in a variety of sizes and power levels, from small practice models to powerful stage-ready amps. Combo amps offer versatility and ease of use, making them popular among guitarists of all levels.

Guitar Amps and Cabs

Guitar amps and cabs are just as crucial to a guitarist’s tone as the guitar itself. Amplifiers shape the sound—whether it’s clean and warm, crunchy and bluesy, or full-on distortion for rock and metal. They come in two main types: combo amps, which include both the amp and speaker in one unit, and amp heads, which are paired with separate cabinets (cabs) to project the sound.

Cabs come in various sizes, like 1×12, 2×12, or the mighty 4×12, each delivering different tone and feel. Speakers, cabinet wood, and even open vs closed backs all influence the sound. Matching the right amp and cab gives players control over their dynamics, tone, and presence—whether you’re playing in your bedroom, a studio, or on a festival stage.

valve

Valve, also known as tube, refers to a type of amplifier technology that uses vacuum tubes to amplify the guitar signal. Valve amps are renowned for their warm, rich tone, natural compression, and smooth distortion when driven hard. Many players prefer valve amps because of their dynamic response and organic sound character. Although they require more maintenance and can be heavier than solid-state amps, valve amplifiers remain a favourite choice for professional musicians seeking classic tones and expressive performance.
